The Compliance tab and VOR checks
The Compliance tab on your aircraft page answers the question every owner quietly runs before a flight: what do my records say about whether this airplane is legal to fly? It's a records-driven evaluation, anchored explicitly to Part 91 operations — and it's important to be clear about what it is and isn't.
How the evaluation is organized
The "Legal to Fly" view groups requirements into three buckets:
- Required for All Flight — the items that apply any time the airplane flies.
- IFR & Controlled Airspace — items that matter when you file or fly where they're required.
- For-Hire — items that apply to for-hire operations.
One thing to internalize: this reflects what your records show. It is not an airworthiness certification — TachMinder never certifies an aircraft as airworthy, and a green screen doesn't replace your preflight judgment or your mechanic's. If a record is missing or stale, the evaluation reflects the record, not the airplane.
Logging a VOR check
For IFR operations that use the VOR system for navigation, §91.171 governs the VOR operational check. The VOR check card on the Compliance tab lets you log yours, and the entry is written into the aircraft's logbook records:
Do the check
Perform the VOR check using whichever method you use — the app records the method along with the result.Log it on the VOR check card
Enter the date, the place, the bearing error, and the method used.Sign it
The record carries the pilot's signature — the check isn't complete as a record without it.
The specific interval and tolerance requirements are shown in-app where you log the check.
The IFR-equipped flag
Marking your aircraft as IFR-equipped enables IFR-specific tracking, including the items in the IFR & Controlled Airspace group. You set the flag on the Edit aircraft page — see Editing aircraft details.
Why the app may ask for your airframe serial
If your airframe serial number is missing, a nudge appears on this tab. That's not bureaucratic tidiness: the serial number improves AD matching, since applicability often depends on it. Understanding AD tracking explains how matching works.
TachMinder is an informational tool only. It is not a substitute for a certified A&P mechanic or IA. Only certificated mechanics and appropriately rated repair stations can approve return-to-service. Always verify Airworthiness Directive data with the FAA AD database (drs.faa.gov). TachMinder does not certify airworthiness.
